Watershed and Festival of Ideas welcome award-winning author Alaa Al Aswany to Bristol. This is a rare chance to hear a unique Egyptian voice and a great writer whose phenomenally successful novel The Yacoubian Building enjoyed the status of number one best seller for over two years across the Middle East and inspired the highest budget Arabic-language film ever.
Aswany is also known for his incisive comments on politics in the Middle East and is regarded as one of the region's leading commentators. He will speak about his political work, his new novel Chicago before a screening of The Yacoubian Building. The interview will last for one hour, followed by a 30 minute break before the film begins.
